Bonaire

On our cruise last month to the ABC islands (as Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are known), I was least excited about Bonaire. I was coming off of back surgery and it’s more of an active person’s paradise rather than the more cosmopolitan islands of Aruba and Curacao. However, I think of all the islands, Bonaire ended up being my favorite.

We were supposed to go snorkeling there but unfortunately that didn’t happen. However, we were just standing on the sidewalk near the port watching the water for a bit and there were all these tropical fish swimming around. I identified at least three parrot fish and a couple of groupers. I think there was even a butterfly fish at one point.

The reefs are pretty much part of the island so that you didn’t even have to swim to see them, much less snorkel out in deep water. It was a fascinating experience but it did make me even sorrier that we didn’t end up snorkeling there. But perhaps another time.
